Dear President Oliver,
We, the undersigned, are alumni of Union University. We came to Union from different places and backgrounds, and left to join different fields and communities. We have in common pride in our alma mater and a concern for the direction it is taking.
Therefore, we write now to express our deep disappointment with your endorsement, along with three members of the Union University faculty, of the “Nashville Statement” by The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood. Your signature, followed by the words “President, Union University,” casts a pall on all of us that we felt called to speak out against.
The Nashville Statement is a declaration of bigotry and condemnation that is a far cry the faith, hope, love, and acceptance we were taught was the hallmark of the faith of Union University.
In Article IV, the Statement feels the need to clarify that being female is not a “tragedy,” an incredible notion that would not have to be disavowed were it not implied by the entire history of The Council. In Article X, it flatly states that those of us who are allies to the LGBT community and love and accept our LBGT family cannot call ourselves Christians. Most unbelievably, in Article VIII, it proclaims that those of us who are openly LBGT people are not “part of the natural goodness of God’s original creation,” a breathtakingly broad and cruel condemnation that we were taught is not the role of humans.
We were taught at Union University, above all, that our careers, words, and daily actions have a higher purpose. They are not simply the way in which we pass our days; they are the way in which we answer the call to do more. We are not just lawyers, we fulfill our obligation to act justly and love mercy; we are not just teachers, we raise children in the ways in which they should go; we are not just health care professionals, we care for the sick as we would the King; we are not just activists, we give hope and a future to our communities; we are not just business leaders, we strive to work and take care of what we have been given; we are not just artists, we capture the beauty of Creation and its inhabitants.
A university, our University, is supposed to be a place of diversity, learning, and growth. It is supposed to be a place to be challenged, and to seek not only formal education but also an education about yourself and your place in the world. By signing the Nashville Statement with the name of Union University, you have placed the undersigned names, the names of all our fellow alumni, and the names of every student currently walking Union University’s campus on a document that advises us that who we are is not acceptable, and we have no place in the world. This is not the role of university, or a university president. And it is not what our University stands for.
In short, we were deeply grieved that our alma mater, where we thought we were taught to love our fellow humans and live for a higher purpose, has instead decided its role is to decide who is saved and who is condemned. We grieve for ourselves, for the sadness with which we today look on the degrees that we have hung with pride in places of honor. But even more, we grieve for those students who today walk the campus of Union University, knowing that hovering over the Great Lawn, bubbling in the fountain, blowing through the quads, curling around the columns, and ringing from the Bell Tower is a condemnation of their very existence.
We write today to tell you, our fellow alumni, current students, and the world, that we, graduates of Union University, do not agree with the hurtful statements that have been endorsed with our names. It is our belief that nothing is outside God’s creation, and it is right of no person to condemn any other. We are men and women, gay and straight, allies and activists, and we are alumni of Union University. We ask that you represent us better, as we strive to represent you.
